Jenna Ortega, the breakout star of the Netflix hit series Wednesday, is reportedly in early discussions to join the cast of Beetlejuice 2, directed by Tim Burton.
According to Deadline’s sources, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are also expected to return for the sequel, reprising their iconic roles from the original film.
The new project, which has been developing for years, will see Lydia’s daughter taking on a central role. Ortega is said to be the top choice for the part, which could propel her career to new heights.
The production hopes to start shooting in London in late May or early June, although the budget has not yet been finalized.
There have been some back-and-forth negotiations, but insiders suggest a deal may be imminent.
Beetlejuice, released in 1988, was a massive success, grossing $80 million on a $15 million budget.
It also won an Oscar for Best Makeup at the 1989 Academy Awards. The film has since become a cult classic and is widely regarded as one of Burton’s most beloved works.
Ortega, one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young stars, has been on a roll lately.
In addition to her role in Wednesday, which has broken viewing records on Netflix, she is set to host Saturday Night Live on March 11 and will appear in the upcoming horror film Scream VI.
If Ortega signs on for Beetlejuice 2, it would mark a reunion with Burton, who directed her in the Netflix series.
The news was first reported on The Hot Mic Podcast with John Rocha and Jeff Sneider.
Ortega is represented by CAA, Gilbertson Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Fans of the young actress are eagerly awaiting confirmation of her involvement in the Beetlejuice sequel, which could cement her status as one of Hollywood’s brightest rising stars.
